Examples of the most common billing mistakes

ü            Duplicate billing: Being charged twice for the same service, supplies or medications.

ü            Incorrect number of days in the hospital: Most hospitals will charge for the day of admission but not for day of discharge.

ü            Incorrect room charges: If you are in a semi-private room, make sure you are not charged for a private.

ü            Incorrect operating room time: Compare the time listed with your anesthesiologist’s records.

ü            Upcoding: This is shifting the charge for a lower cost service or medication to a more expensive one.  A doctor orders a generic drug, but you’re billed for a pricier brand name.

ü            Keystroke error: A computer operator accidentally hits a wrong key on the keyboard, changing 1 procedure to 11, for example. This can cost you hundreds of dollars.

ü            Billing for canceled work: Your physician ordered an expensive test and then canceled it, but you were charged anyway.

ü            Billing for services never rendered.
